God Has Spoken

I don’t like to write too much about politics. I don’t find that having political debates gets people to come together and solve problems. More often than not, politics divides people and rather than being two sides with differing opinions, we become enemies who lash out at each other. However, every now and then I come across a quote from someone regarding politics that I feel deserves a bigger audience to have some meaningful discussion. This time, politics (a topic I don’t write about) and religion (a topic I write about all the time) have come together into one ridiculous assertion.

For anyone who isn’t aware, Sarah Sanders, daughter of conservative Pastor Mike Huckabee, is the White House press secretary for President Donald Trump. She is also a conservative Christian. In a recent interview with CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network), she said this:
“I think that God calls all of us to fill different roles at different times, and I think that God wanted Donald Trump to be president and that’s why he’s there.”

Not only does she think God is real and involved in our lives, she also thinks that he personally selected Donald Trump to be President of the United States. I am not going to take a political position on this, but I will say that a good and just god taking the side of someone who once said you can “grab a woman by the p***y” is not very likely. However, if God is not good, moral, just or benevolent and instead is okay with the mistreatment of women and bigotry, then maybe he would condone some of the president’s actions and place him on his throne in the Oval Office. Maybe Trump mixed in some “locker room talk” in his prayers and he and God shared a giggle. Who knows?

Sanders also said this in her interview with CBN:
“I think he has done a tremendous job in supporting a lot of the things that people of faith really care about.”

I am no longer a Christian, but I can tell you that a lot of what Trump says goes against what I was taught about morality and decency. There are some positive things that have happened in our country with him as president, but who deserves the credit for that? Trump? Obama? God himself? If you believe Sarah Sanders, all is going according to God’s plan.

  1. Ben, you bring up an excellent point here. People of religion can rationalize anything at all with a small number of cliches. “God has a plan” is one; and the other is “He works in mysterious ways.” I think the (fixed) election of an immoral, unethical, irreligious, philandering, lying, tax cheating, treasonous, duplicitous, creep like Donald Trump would, I assume, fall into the latter.

      1. I think you’re right, Ben. They were so desperate to beat Clinton they would have signed on with anyone, no matter how toxic. They basically sold their souls, or at least their sense of morality. But we should have seen it coming. They have always been willing to do anything they need to, including ignoring the teachings of their own god, to get their own way.

    1. Seriously?! Hadn’t heard that, but it sure as f**k doesn’t surprise me. Watching Christians do back bends over defending tRump is rather entertaining. Too bad it’s also sickening, disgusting, and damaging to the country and our image abroad. Trump is much like the god of the OT: grouchy, childish, spoiled-rotten, and a whining, screaming, demanding baby. I see why many Christians love him.

    Come and live in Oz. We’ll have you. Not so many religious nuts, and I can almost certainly guarantee no-one will shoot you.

    On the other hand, I can’t entirely guarantee you won’t be taken by a crocodile, or have your leg bitten off by a white pointer shark; or get stung by a blue-ringed octopus; get bitten by a tiger snake, or funnel web spider; get stalked, tortured, murdered by crazed outback serial killers; disappear through a portal into another dimension while climbing Hanging Rock; get chased by giant feral pigs; wake in fright at the prospect of a night kangaroo hunt with beer-guzzling, testosterone fuelled hoons; get mowed down by biker gangs when they take over the highways; burnt to a crisp in a raging bushfire, or drowned in floodwaters; so on, and so on, any number of which may befall the unlucky visitor to these shores.

    Other than that, it’s really quite safe.

    As all of human history has so abundantly and repeatedly shown and proven that when humans — any type, any color, any height, width, and language spoken, anywhere! — mix “religion” or “Gods” or “Monisms” of any sort with governing… bad, BAD things start to simmer up, boil, and explode. Usually in all cases, it ends up that simple, expendable civilians take the BULK of casualties and punishment rather than the “Leaders” and their assets. I realize I’m preaching to the choir here about federal law, our Constitution, etc, but bear with me please. 😉

    Our U.S. Constitution (which way too many evangy-fundy Xians do not understand, including our current President!) explicitly AND implicitly states…

    Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; … — Amendment I

    This also implies the practice of NO RELIGION shall be protected! What is also a critical component of the First Amendment is the clear-cut Separation of Church and State. IOW, religion and worship are a PRIVATE MATTER not intrusive into the greater population, including on but not limited to PUBLIC property/properties! Furthermore, not only does our U.S. Constitution protect ALL citizens, regardless of religious beliefs or non-beliefs, but our Founding Fathers unequivocally wanted and designed a Neutral (Secular?) federal government and Constitution and 3 Branches of Checks-n-Balances… but many landmark Supreme Court decisions have (for now) clearly upheld (with very few exceptions during slavery) the spirit of our Founding Fathers wishes via law, but also what is explicitly and implicitly written in our Constitution!

    If anyone doubts this, research it EXTENSIVELY yourself or go to my May 2015 blog-post: “The Mistaken Identity of the U.S.” There I present a litany of personal letters from and between Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine, the six premiere Fathers who constructed our laws and government. Also included in that blog-post are 15 landmark Supreme Court decisions between 1860 and 1992 that reinforces what the Founding Fathers clearly established!

    In my personal opinion, “God” or any semblance of “religion” DOES NOT BELONG in our governments, but especially on the federal levels! Period. It isn’t a debate if you KNOW the U.S. Constitutions and the 6 premier Founding Fathers!

    1. This is another one of those situations where I can read something (like your comment) and see how far I’ve come in a relatively short time. Not long ago I would have said separation of church and state is a mistake. We need God everywhere, especially in our schools and government. Now I see how foolish and dangerous that is. Not to mention that if God were real and wanted to be part of our schools, government or any other institution, he would be. That we can, with stroke of a pen, keep him away shows his non-existence or impotence in the world.

      I still feel that if people want to believe in something, they are welcome to. But it needs to be personal worship. Once people start preaching to others or use their beliefs to influence laws, a line has been crossed. If people want to believe or not believe, government should stay out of it and remain neutral. If people use their beliefs to hold back progress or discriminate then they need to be called out on it and held accountable.

      1. I could not agree more vehemently with you Ben! Thank you and you are welcome. You are right, even if “God” were real and specifically “chose” first only 1 nomadic tribe in 1 tiny region of this enormous Earth, then supposedly selected another larger group/culture (Greco-Rome), then centuries later supposedly another Arabian/Persian culture, the last 2 claiming exclusive rights to this one truth, from one “God” who has VERY SHITTY foresight not to have worked all this out in the first place…

        …yes, is quite frankly a pretty stupid ignorant impotent “God”!!!! Are you kidding me? LOL 😉 But if YOU (as in 1 person, 1 family) want to believe in fairy-tales, myths, beguiling ancient stories… do so privately and DO NOT force it on others… which by the way is EXACTLY what our U.S. Constitution implies & protects, is exactly what our 6 premier Founding Fathers designed from the get go, AND our Supreme Court has upheld (essentially) since at least 1860 fifteen plus different times!!! Period. Done. The insanity SHOULD be over!!! (mic drop and walks off stage)

  7. I always wondered why many conservative Christians would support such an immoral, indecent president. But, as others have said it’s easy to rationsalise things away if you believe that God put him in there and that ‘Trump totally said he was a Christian once”. It’s like they think that, regardless of whats going on, everything will work out magically in the end like a Disney film.

    1. I find it rather unbelievable that Christians can’t just accept that some things just happen. They say everything is part of a greater plan and God designed it all this way. God himself appointed Trump. Trump didn’t just win because of votes. God, in his infinite wisdom, personally chose the great orange Messiah to lead his people. Amen.
